Synopsis

A young man has just escaped from prison and seeks refuge near a clearing in the woods. Hidden from view, he bears silent witness to a young mother's attempt to abandon her blind infant. A chance meeting between two desperate souls sheds light on hard decisions they both must make. The Clearing is a delicate tale of failed escapes from failed lives, and a moving story about freedom and responsibility and a fragile thing called hope. Will daybreak provide them with a clean break?

Filmmaker Notes: Writer/director Kat Smith made her directorial debut with The Clearing. The film took six days to shoot in the Los Angeles area. She says, "I think I understand the film more today than I did when I first wrote it. It used to be about abandonment and temptation of escape. But now it's about two people who learn that in order to pass through the difficulties life hands you, you have to start from where you are.
